Waltham Walk : Essex: 18th/ 19th May 2013
Out first entry on a BB organised 2 day hike - mainly for preparation before the Cleveland (Yorkshire) Hike at the end of June - it turned out to be great fun and we weren't far off from winning - ending 3rd and 5th - not bad for our first event and out lads were a good 2 years younger than the other teams. Oh , an all girls team have won the mini trek (11 to 14's)
for the 1st time in the events 35 year history.
In the main event, where
they don't expect anybody to be younger than 15 (and we have 13/14 year olds
competing- have to be 14 by end of Aug). So as ever we've entered a young team
who are up against 16/17/18 year olds
14 teams entered, but only 8 met
the full criteria (team to stay together etc) .
8th is east kent.
7th is
west kent - 455 points
6th is - 499 - bedhampton ?
The excitement -
nothing on euro vision.
5th is - us, Jonny, Ali, ben 509 points.
4th -
563 points - luton
3rd - us, Zach, Isaac and Gideon. We get a nice silver
cup. 570
2nd - a composite team - 2 bb groups combining. 626
1st - 630
Not bad. We lost out on the points but whipped them all on time. So good
preparation for Cleveland.
A fun w'e
Families
could do this , lots of mixed teams and with super vets and tinies goes from 8
to 80 .
Same w'e next year.

Walk Blog 3?
Hi
All,
We're at the finish , awaiting the BBQ (no that was good - now
waiting for the award ceremony) in a lovely village called High Easter, just up
the road from Good Easter. The sun is out and all is good.
Team Jonny
(Ali and Ben) got their map reading skills together today (or rather resisted
the urge to attempt short cuts) and finished 1st (leaving in about 7th) before
11am (the earliest scheduled time to finish was 12) . Team Zach (Isaac and
Gideon) left last (because they were first to arrive on Saturday) and arrived by
around 11.30.
Yesterday evening was very enjoyable, the sun came out and
the field filled up with over 100 small tents - 40 or so for our event, the rest
for DoE and Scouts events.
The boys cooked their meals without any problems.
They were up at 5am to cook their breakfasts, and had their tents and rucksacks
packed to be off at 7am. I was 'loosely supervising' in normal fashion.
Wow, almost too warm. Just waiting for the awards. Hopefully soon. We should
have done well, just depends upon points for activities etc.
Will let
you know.

I'm sat outside the Viper freehouse ,(oh does that mean there are
adders in these woods?), in the almost sunshine, but certainly warm and good
conditions and lovely countryside - waiting for our second team to arrive at
checkpoint 3.
We arrived at the start just about on time. We were booked
in to be the last 2 teams away in the Main competition - in 13th and 14th.
(Note for the interested person on packing - I got 4 rucksacks plus my bag
and a food bag in the top box, and the other 2 rucksacks in the boot bit, so
nothing in the car - how good is that.)
Jonny, Ali and Ben C - team 13
left at 9.10 and were in 6th place by the 2nd check point. Still haven't
appeared at CP3. Zach, Isaac and Gideon - team 14, left at 9.15 , were in 4th
place a CP2 and 3rd at CP 3 .
At each CP there is an activity. A simple
but fun team building event. A blind Maze at CP2, an assault course here at CP3.
You appear to get more points for the activities than for time between them. The
boys have to plot their own course between CP's. Plenty of opportunity to get
lost. Team 13 have already tried a shortcut that backfired. A vets team (men my
age) just left CP3 in completely the wrong direction ! ( The marshallscalled them back , which is unfair
really - there you go - we could enter a leaders team next year) .
So
far, so good. They all appear to enjoying it - but it's early yet. They may not
be able to run for 25 miles with a full rucksack.
Aha, team13 have just
arrived, another attempted shortcut , and they've lost time.
It's a
really well organised event. Good to be taking part. Lovely countryside.
Now for the big decision of the day, after my breakfast paninni in a lovely old
world tea room and village (wow, this is Essex?) , do I have room for the Viper's home made steak
and ale pie ? A tough one. Could come back this evening.
Hope Chris' bike
riding trip is also going well.
