OUTLINE PROGRAMME
Friday Evening; For Inters, Company & Seniors
Aim to arrive between 6 and 6.30pm. The map is shown separately. We'll put the tents up - which is part of the badge work for the boys.
Escape from Colditz wide game - based upon the original board game with 3 separate phases;
1: On site wide game to plan the escape route; and obtain the escape equipment while avoiding capture by the German sentries.
2: The escape - based upon their 'Do or Die' cards the squads have to reach their designated bases about a mile away within the set time.
3: The return - return back to the Black Barn without being caught by the patrolling sentries. (OK, this isn't in the board game, but as the boys will be out there, they may as well have some fun getting back).
The Big Film - followed by washing up, sandwich making & potato pealing for the boys who won't go to sleep.
Saturday Morning: The Juniors will be joining us at 0930.
Escape skills 1:
The main activity will be build the Dens which the boys will sleep in for Saturday evening - again this is part of their badge work as they will be designing their dens on the Wednesday evenings leading up to Survival Camp.
Each squad will also have their opportunity to do some air rifle shooting & possible archery during the morning.
Some boys will also have the opportunity to go fishing; they will need to bring a fishing license. Please indicate if you're interested.
Saturday Afternoon: An informal afternoon, which depending upon the weather will hopefuly include;
Free time & field games & zip wire & bonfire building & waterslide & golf & go carts
Escape skills 2: Various leaders will be demonstrating skills - the boys can choose which ones to try; will hopefully include;
rabbit skinning; partridge plucking; fish preparation; knife; axe & knot work.
learn to drive - a tractor ! - activity tbc.- can't promise it but we'll try and borrow a tractor for the afternoon.
Saturday Evening: a
BBQ & Bonfire & On site wide game & another big film & sleeping in dens
Sunday Morning: inspired by watching the Modern Pentathlon at the Olympics , (we hope to have a modern pentathon athlete & Reading Univ student who has trained with the GB silver medallist along to help us) ...
Escape stamina - which squad* will be quickest and most accurate across the following disciplines ..
We'll be swimming in the Thames at Pangbourne before breakfast. Juniors 50m; Inters 100m; Company 150m; Seniors 200m (This stretch of the river is one of the specific 'Wild Swim' sites featured by the Outdoor Swimming Society. The Society are arranging to swim the whole length of the Thames during 2012. According to the Environment agency website the water quality at Pangbourne is Very Good to Good. We will have canoes in the water to assist).
Instead of horsriding; we'll be attempting a mountainbike course through the woods & tracks around Rushall.
We'll be doing the combined run and shooting.
Not quite sure what to do with the fencing - although it may be a sumo wrestling competition - or it could be tug of war (original olympic event) across the river Pang (the losers will get wet) - or Murderball (a paralympic event now called wheelchair rugby) !
* hopefully in each squad there will be enough boys with the ability and desire to compete on behalf of the squad
Sunday Afternoon: Clear up, field games and go home.
Escape stories : across the weekend we'll be hearing stories from a couple of people who spent a lot of time trying to escape .
What to Bring? The usual stuff; the essentials are;

Survival Camp – this coming weekend
- It’s not too late to come – programme details & map at www.2ndreading.weebly.com – just email me and pay on Wednesday.
- Wet , cold horrible weather? – the benefit of Rushall is that it offers a number of buildings, some heated , that we can sleep in & use during the day – so rain or shine - we’ll have a great time; anyway, at the moment the forecast is good for the weekend !
- Okay, apart from the list on the website, here’s some more stuff you need to know & pack.
- Make sure you have a good tea (for those coming Friday) and a good breakfast (those arriving Saturday) before you leave home.
- Give a shout if transport is an issue we may be able to lay on something.
- Heavy duty gardening gloves; and a Swiss army style pen knife (over 11s only) for cutting down those ferns.
- For any over 11 who would like to go fishing (limited to about 5) , please email Patrick for further instructions (rods provided) [email protected]
- Please bring a long a mountain bike – we need about 12 to make the modern pentathlon work – there is secure storage on site.
- We’ll risk assess the swimming on the morning – but make sure you bring a towel/ warm clothes as if we go for it – or the water slide - , we’ll get cold pretty quickly, so will need to change quickly.
- And to complete the modern pentathlon (apart from a cross country run with shooting & archery) – we’ll finish with an ancient sport of quarterstaff fighting on a log ! – I decided not to spend £200 on padded pugil/ gladiator sticks earlier, so to create our own ; could you bring any of the following that you may have/ and you don’t mind being used – old large pillows/ pillow cases/ boxing gloves/ boxing style helmets – oh, I’m thinking jousting while being pulled on the go carts in the barn with lots of straw bails …
- Old bike inner tubes to make sling shots.
- Any dry wood you may have- the boys will be cooking their rabbits on a spit over an open fire, and if we don’t have enough dry wood , they’ll either get hungry or food poisoning.
- An old frying pan you have that you may not mind if if doesn’t get returned – or returned in a mess.
- Likewise – tea towels
- And lastly and most importantly – if you don’t provide a cake, the boys won’t get any deserts over the weekend. (any boy bringing home made Bara Brith will have a good weekend).
Any questions - Best to chat on Wed evening – thanks
