Survival Camp
“I mean, in the last few months alone, I've been pinned in a big set of white-water rapids, been bitten by an angry snake in a jungle, had a close escape with a big mountain rockfall, narrowly avoided being eaten by a huge croc in the Australian swamps, and had to cut away from my main parachute and come down on my reserve, some five thousand feet above the Arctic plateau. Every day is the most wonderful of blessings, and a gift that I never, ever take for granted.
Oh, and as for the scars, broken bones, aching limbs and sore back?
I consider them just gentle reminders that life is precious - and that maybe, just maybe, I am more fragile than I dare to admit.”
― Bear Grylls
We don't claim to be as mad as Bear, but Survival Camp is our own little attempt to push back the boundaries, take some simple risks, get to know and enjoy the great outdoors , and hopefully help the boys, dads and leaders live life, a little more full. We started in 2008 with 12 juniors at the YMCA cabin at Padworth , expanded to include Company & Seniors and moved to Rushall Farm to cope with the numbers. Last year we had over 50 young people on camp over the weekend. They seem to love it.
2017 IS OUR 10TH SURVIVAL CAMP.
Please note: Ticks are out there, and they can carry nasty stuff - like Lymes disease. We haven't encountered any problems- but long trousers & sleeves are the best way of providing protection. Look for little black specs on the body afterwards, and if your boy has flu like symptoms after Camp then refer to your GP.
What to Bring? The usual stuff; the essentials are;
- sleeping bag & mat; torch; old gloves; old clothes (long trousers & long sleeves best), a woolly/fleece hat to sleep in, ; shorts , t-shirt for the water slide & towel : and a cake to share (preferably home made !)
What not to bring? - The usual stuff:
Electrical items/ phones/ cameras/ - plates & cutlery (provided) - not loads of sweets and no energy drinks including coke, mr pepper - they will be confiscated and binned

- Wet , cold horrible weather? – the benefit of Rushall is that it offers a number of buildings, some heated , that we can sleep in & use during the day – so rain or shine - we’ll have a great time; anyway, at the moment the forecast is good for the weekend !
- Make sure you have a good tea (for those coming Friday) and a good breakfast (those arriving Saturday) before you leave home.
- Please make car share/ lift arrangements amongst yourselves - speak to us if you're really stuck
- Heavy duty gardening gloves; and a Swiss army style pen knife (over 11s only) for cutting down those ferns. But no larger knives/implements.
- And lastly and most importantly – if you don’t provide a cake, the boys won’t get any deserts over the weekend. (any boy bringing home made Bara Brith will have a good weekend).
